MICHIGAN — Several key Democrats in Michigan showed support for Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden's pick of California U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate Tuesday.

Harris, who was chosen among several female candidates, including Michigan. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, will become the first Black person, and the third woman, to secure a major party's vice presidential nomination once she and Biden are formally selected at this month's Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee.

Several Democrats, including Whitmer on her personal Twitter page, showed support for Harris while utilizing the #WeHaveHerBack hashtag.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel commented on the Harris pick with humor, noting Harris' typical attire and saying she is "super excited for this ticket."

Sen. Debbie Stabenow shared a personal anecdote from when Harris visited Michigan and showed support for Stebenow while she was campaigning for her current seat in 2018.

"That whole day in Detroit she was fun, inspiring, and above all, the best partner I could possibly ask for. #BidenHarris2020," Stabenow tweeted. "That's the Kamala Harris I know. And if we help her become our next Vice President, I know she'll be an incredible partner for Joe Biden and the people of Michigan."

The choice of Harris was criticized by Michigan GOP Chairman Laura Cox.

Cox also used the opportunity to criticize Whitmer, tweeting that "Governor Whitmer’s Veepstakes loss is confirmation of what every Michigander already knew: Gretchen Whitmer just isn’t ready for the big leagues."

Congressman Paul Mitchell sounded off on Twitter by saying Biden had better choices for a running mate.
