It’s hard to imagine now, but there was a time when The Simpsons was the most controversial program on television.

On October 25, 1990, Marge Simpson delivered a warning to audiences at the top of the third episode of the show’s second season: “Tonight’s show, which I totally wash my hands of, is really scary. If you have sensitive children, maybe you should tuck them into bed early tonight instead of writing us angry letters tomorrow.” That episode was the very first installment of “The Treehouse Of Horror,” a spooky collection consisting of three violent and macabre tales, and its airing resulted in a mini-furor by, you guessed it, angry parents of scared children. Undeterred by the complaints (and embiggened by the largely positive response from the 15 million fans who watched the episode), the Simpsons team went on to create a second episode that aired on Halloween night in 1991, and the “Treehouse Of Horror” became an annual tradition that every Simpsons fan young and old looks forward to. This year, the 31st installment of the “Treehouse Of Horror” will air on FOX on Sunday, October 18.

Decider is excited to announce that we’re partnering up with the Paley Center for Media and FOX to present “Paley Front Row: Simpsons Treehouse of Horror,” a virtual panel discussion celebrating 30 years of “Treehouse of Horror” episodes. The panel participants include: Al Jean (EP/showrunner), Matt Selman (EP), Yeardley Smith (voice of Lisa Simpson and moderator), Mike B. Anderson (supervising director), and Steve Moore (director).

We’d like to invite the Decider audience to participate in this one-time only event, which will be occurring on Wednesday, October 14 at 8pm ET/5pm PT. You can register for this free event by clicking here, but hurry — there will be a strict limit of 500 participants. Registrants will also be the first to see “Treehouse Of Horror XXXI,” which will be screened before the official event starting at 7pm ET/4pm PT.

Even if you can’t make it to this event, you can still participate. Over the next week, Decider readers will have a special opportunity to submit questions about the long, storied, and EXTREMELY SPOOKY “Treehouse Of Horror” series for the panel participants via Twitter and Facebook; if your question is chosen, you will be credited by name during the session.

Decider is also excited to announce that we’re going to be giving away a handful of exclusive “Treehouse of Horror XXXI” large-format posters, sure to become a collector’s item (they are part of a very limited-run batch). All you have to do to be entered in this sweepstakes giveaway is to sign-up to receive one of Decider’s free email newsletters, or register to attend the October 14 event. (Please see the full terms and conditions of this giveaway.)
