A fresh layer of snow combined with gusting winds made for treacherous driving around Winnipeg and Southern Manitoba late Wednesday.
Poor visibility and road conditions forced the closure of several highways.
Municipalities throughout the southern part of the province were affected, including:
- Rosenfeld
- Carman
- Elm Creek
- Sperling
- Morden
- Winkler
Travel from the U.S border was also shut down, with Hwy. 75, 32 and 30 all closed.
Google Traffic showed road conditions in the city to be difficult at best.
Manitoba Highways 7 , 8 , and 9 leaving Winnipeg, as well as the Perimeter were all listed as “partly snow covered”.
Traffic alerts posted on social media showed issues across the city, including parts of downtown, St. Boniface, Fort Garry and Polo Park.
Global News weather specialist Mike Koncan said things could get worse heading into the evening.
“As low pressure moves away and high pressure settles over Manitoba, very strong winds are likely,” he said.
Gusts around southern Manitoba will likely reach 60 or 70 km/h into Wednesday evening and reduce visibility on the roads.
