Whitmer Passed Over For VP Nomination, Harris Is Biden's Pick

MICHIGAN β€” Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has named Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate, passing over Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who had been considered a top candidate for the role.

The announcement was made Tuesday, with Biden choosing Harris over other high-profile names such as Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, California Rep. Karen Bass and former Obama national security adviser Susan Rice.

Following Biden's announcement, Whitmer took to her personal Twitter account to show support for Biden and Harris, tweeting that "They will be a fierce team to Build America Back Better."

Whitmer had traveled to Delaware earlier this month to meet with Biden, who has spent months weighing who would serve alongside him as vice president if he wins in November. He had pledged to select a woman and has conducted an expansive search for a running mate.

Biden and Whitmer formed a bond after he campaigned for her in the 2018 gubernatorial election, according to The Associated Press. She is a co-chair on his campaign.
