Flying hot dog projectile shot by Phillie Phanatic injures fan

If you’re sitting close enough to the field at a professional baseball game, chances are you’re keeping an eye out for errant foul balls that might graze by your body, or worse, spill your beer. But one Philadelphia Phillies fan learned that actually, it’s flying footlongs that pose the true threat.

Poor Kathy McVay was blithely enjoying a Monday night game when a hot dog, shot from the Philadelphia Phanatic mascot’s hot-dog cannon, struck her in the face this week. (The hot dogs are wrapped in duct tape and expelled from said cannon as a promotional stunt.) ABC-6 reports McVay sustained facial bruising and a small hematoma in her eye; she also underwent a CAT scan to make sure she didn’t have a concussion. She says she has to ice her face every 20 minutes to keep the swelling and bruising down.

“It hit me like a ton of bricks. My glasses flew,” McVay told ABC-6.

McVay was unable to protect herself from the errant red hot because she recently injured her shoulder (which requires surgery this week). Despite the literal headache, McVay is a goddamn trooper; she says she won’t pursue legal action against the team because she’s such a big Phillies fan.

But she does have a cautionary word to other fans: “Be aware, because you never know. I understand a baseball, but not a hot dog.”
