There’s at least one topic Hillary and Chelsea Clinton don’t see eye to eye on — transgender identity.
In an interview with the the Sunday Times of London, the mother-daughter duo were asked if someone with a beard and penis can ever be a woman.
“Ye-esss. Yes,” Chelsea replied.
Her mom, meanwhile, looked “uneasy,” journalist Decca Aitkenhead wrote.
“Errr. I’m just learning about this,” she said. “It’s a very big generational discussion, because this is not something I grew up with or ever saw. It’s going to take a lot more time and effort to understand what it means to be defining yourself differently.”
And while Chelsea, 39, said she supports children being able to play on sports teams that match their gender identity, Hillary, 71, appeared conflicted.
“I think you’ve got to be sensitive to how difficult this is,” Hillary said. “There are women who’d say [to a trans woman], ‘You know what, you’ve never had the kind of life experiences that I’ve had. So I respect who you are, but don’t tell me you’re the same as me.’ I hear that conversation all the time.”
During the discussion, the reporter pointed out that many women of Hillary’s generation are uncomfortable with biological males sharing their bathrooms.
“I would say that, absolutely,” the former secretary of state said, nodding firmly.
That’s when Chelsea shot a “furious stare” at Aitkenhead, who called out the glare.
“I’m a terrible actor,” the former first daughter laughed.
The pair have been making the rounds to promote their new book, “The Book of Gutsy Women: Favorite Stories of Courage and Resilience,” which features Danica Roem, the first openly trans woman elected to a US state legislature.
Despite the reported tension, the co-authors said they don’t argue about the topic of transgender identity.
But “I get the impression they don’t like to present anything less than a united front to the world,” Aitkenhead noted.
