Disney’s musical history even gets a tribute from one of classical music’s biggest stars. But first: The month on Disney+ begins under the sea.

What to Watch on Disney+: September 2023
Here’s everything you need to watch this September on Disney+.
The Little Mermaid (September 6)
Disney’s campaign of remaking its animated classics as live-action feature films continues with this new take on The Little Mermaid directed by Rob Marshall (Into the Woods), which premiered in theaters earlier this year. It’s not entirely without new stuff, however. Original composer Alan Menken has teamed with Lin-Manual Miranda for some new songs. Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy star as, respectively, Ariel and Ursula. Stream in on Disney+
9/11: One Day In America (September 6)
This year marks the 12th anniversary of 9/11 and Disney+ is adding a number of National Geographic specials. This six-part miniseries exploring the tragedy from different angles earned acclaim when it aired in 2021. Stream in on Disney+
I Am Groot: Season Two (September 6)
The Guardians of the Galaxy series might have come to a close with its third entry but Groot’s adventures live on via these animated shorts starring Baby Groot. (And, yes, that is Vin Diesel providing the voice.) Stream in on Disney+
The Barn Dance (September 8)
Bone Trouble (September 8)
Merbabies (September 8)
Mickey’s Kangaroo (September 8)
Playful Pluto (September 8)
Pluto, Junior (September 8)
As has become standard practice for Disney+ this month brings a new batch of remastered shorts out of the vault. All are fun, but The Barn Dance is a standout as one of Disney’s best early Mickey Mouse shorts and Merbabies as one of its weirdest. (Two other early shorts, All Wet and Trolley Trouble, premiere on September 5.) Stream in on Disney+
Marvel Studios’ Assembled: The Making of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (September 13)
Speaking of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, this making-of special takes viewers behind the scenes as director James Gunn and cast members say goodbye to the team as we know it. Expect it to get emotional. Stream in on Disney+
Animals Up Close With Bertie Gregory (September 13)
Wildlife filmmaker Bertie Gregory’s new series promises, as its title suggests, to get up close with animals, from the inhabitants of the Antarctic to jungle dwellers. It’s a follow-up to Epic Adventures with Bertie Gregory, though this doesn’t sound any less epic. Stream in on Disney+
Lang Lang Plays Disney (September 15)
Superstar pianist Lang Lang performs an evening of Disney music at London’s Royal Albert Hall in this new special. Between the songs, the special will feature the musician discussing his lifelong love of Disney. Stream in on Disney+
Marvel Studios’ Assembled: The Making of Secret Invasion (September 20)
A rare second installment of the Marvel Studios’ Assembled, which usually arrives at a pace of one entry per month, this special recounts the making-of Disney+’s latest Marvel miniseries. (Unless everyone involved are secretly Skrulls, in which case it might be something far more sinister.) Stream in on Disney+
Disney’s Launchpad: Season Two (September 29)
Returning for a second season, this collection of shorts showcases up-and-coming Disney animation talent via shorts made with the help of their mentors. The latest batch includes a story set at an ice cream competition and the tale of a Northern Cheyenne teen reconnecting with their heritage. Stream in on Disney+
