World War II Grenade Found In Joliet

Joliet police called for the Cook County Bomb Squad to take custody of the grenade which was found near Channahon Road.

JOLIET, IL - This week a heavy construction company working about a quarter-mile east of Houbolt Road made a discovery that its workers will be talking about for many years. On Tuesday, crews with Im Crushing, LLC, called for the Joliet Police Department after they found a grenade. Deputy Chief of Police Ed Gregory said the company, which has an address in Mokena, was digging in the 3500 block of Channahon Road. The site where the grenade was found was isolated, only accessible by all-terrain vehicles. Officers cordoned off the area and called in the Cook County Bomb Squad to take custody of the grenade, Gregory said.

When police found the grenade, they noticed that its pin was still intact. Eventually, the bomb squad took custody of the grenade to safely dispose of it. Joliet police were later notified the grenade was from World War II but the explosives had already been removed, Gregory told Joliet Patch.

Gregory said that police are befuddled about how the grenade wound up in Joliet. "I don't know and I've got no idea on that," he added.
