'Family Matters' House To Be Torn Down With No Regard For Your Childhood Memories

The Lincoln Park home featured in the opening credits of the popular 1990s TV series will be torn down to make room for a condo.

CHICAGO, IL — "It's a rare condition in this day and age to read any good news on the newspaper page." With that disclaimer, we must impart a bit of devastating news: The two-story Lincoln Park house where Steve Urkel once transformed himself into Stefan Urquelle is slated to be torn to the ground, and with it, the precious memories of kids who grew up watching the popular 1990s TV show.

According to DNAinfo, Chicago officials OK'd (without even asking any of us!) crews to "wreck and remove a two-story frame multi-unit residence." A "two story multi-unit residence?" Don't they mean "a tower of dreams with real love bursting out of every seam"? A three-unit condo will elbow its way into the sacred space.

The "Family Matters" house is just another casualty of Lincoln Park's trend toward upscale, unaffordable living. Over the past 50 years, the face of Lincoln Park has kept changing as abruptly and unapologetically as the "Family Matters" theme song (which had three, count 'em, three versions) did. It was once home to a large population of Puerto Rican immigrants. Now, the neighborhood's demographic is increasingly dominated by upper middle class white residents. Anyone who has left Chicago and returned will notice that many of the area's favorite haunts have met their demise: Uncle Fun and Carol's Pub, for instance, have vanished into thin air. I guess it's just part of the wheels of progress sloughing off some of Chicago's beloved memories. Everywhere you look. Everywhere you look.
