WASHINGTON, DC — Secret Service members escorted President Donald Trump from his daily coronavirus briefing at the White House just before 6 p.m. Monday. The White House then went on lockdown. Trump remained silent as he was escorted from the briefing room.

Minutes later, the president continued his briefing and said a Secret Service member shot a suspect outside the gates of the White House. The suspect was shot in the chest and taken to George Washington University hospital, according to multiple reports.

A senior official told an ABC news correspondent that the shooting happened near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. The suspect opened fire on a "non-White House employee." A uniformed Secret Service officer returned fire, wounding the suspect. It is not known if the suspect mentioned the president when he opened fire, reports said.
