Amazon up and running in Bessemer, and still hiring

Amazon says its Bessemer fulfillment center is now up and running.

New employees entered the 855,000-square-foot building for the first time March 29. It employs more than 1,500 full-time employees, and the online retailer says it is still hiring there.

“Our team at Amazon is thankful for the support we have received from state and community leaders, and we are excited to be a part of the Bessemer community,” Amazon Director of Operations Travis Maynard said. “We’re proud to create great jobs in Bessemer with industry-leading pay and benefits that start on day one, in a safe, innovative workplace.”

Earlier this week, Amazon announced it is creating another 75,000 jobs nationwide to deal with consumer demand during the coronavirus pandemic. That’s after earlier ramping up hiring to deal with the demand for products during the pandemic’s lockdown. During a tour of the facility last year while it was under construction, company officials said the fulfillment center has 22 miles of conveyor belts, and can ship more than 100,000 items a day.
