The Kansas City Chiefs have not specifically acknowledged whether Patrick Mahomes officially suffered a concussion in last week’s win over Cleveland, only that he was in and cleared the NFL’s concussion protocol.
The superstar quarterback also has been dealing with turf toe in his left foot in preparation for Sunday’s AFC Championship game against the Buffalo Bills, NFL Network reported. The foot injury limited Mahomes during the week, but he took all of the team’s practice reps and is not listed on the Chiefs’ injury official report as the defending champions look to reach the Super Bowl for the second consecutive season.
“I’ll be out there and be myself,” Mahomes told reporters Friday. “The next day [the toe] was very sore, and every single day since then it’s gotten a lot better.”
There is no expectation that Mahomes will need surgery on his foot, but he’ll be re-eavaluated by a foot specialist following the season, according to the NFL Network report. The Chiefs also considered the toe “a bigger issue” as related to his status this week than his placement in the league’s concussion protocol.
The 25-year-old Mahomes was held out of the rest of last week’s win over the Browns after he appeared to stagger after getting back to his feet following a tackle in the third quarter. Backup quarterback Chad Henne played the remainder of the game.
