Bay Area pop music: 13 can’t-miss concerts and festivals in spring 2024

Say goodbye to rainy skies and dreary clouds, and let live music brighten your days as spring sets in. The Bay Area’s roster of upcoming shows spans genres and decades, offering local music fans the chance to discover their next obsession or revisit an old favorite. 

Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are slated to perform at Chase Center on March 28 and 31.

The rock icon and the E Street Band are set to make up postponed San Francisco concerts this month at Chase Center. Originally scheduled for Dec. 10-12, the shows were delayed due to Springsteen’s recovery from peptic ulcer disease. 

The North American tour, Springsteen’s first with the E Street Band since 2017, began at Chicago’s Wrigley Field last summer and features a lineup including Max Weinberg, Garry W. Tallent, Roy Bittan, Steven Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren and Jake Clemons, nephew of the late Clarence Clemons.

Laufey 

Recent Grammy winner Laufey is set to play three nights at the Masonic, April 11-13.

Music has always run through the veins of the Icelandic jazz-pop singer, who performed with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra as a cello soloist when she was just 15. She studied at Berklee College of Music and released her debut EP, “Everything I Know About Love,” in 2022. 

Now, the 24-year-old plans to bring her “Bewitched: The Goddess” tour to the Masonic for three shows. The tour celebrates her sophomore album, “Bewitched,” which was released in September and earned Laufey her first Grammy nomination and win for best traditional pop vocal album at this year’s award ceremony.

Brittany Howard 

Brittany Howard is bringing her “What Now” tour to the Fillmore on April 16-17.

The vocal powerhouse began her musical career fronting the rock band Alabama Shakes, making two records that were met with critical acclaim. When she decided to fly solo with her 2019 record “Jamie,” she was met with just as much praise. Her single “Stay High” even got a Childish Gambino remix and a Terry Crews lip-syncing music video. 

Now she’s hitting the road for her second solo tour, in support of her sophomore record, “What Now.” The tour kicked off in Chicago last month and is slated to continue through the summer, with two San Francisco shows along the way at the Fillmore in April.

Berhana  

Berhana is scheduled to play the Independent on April 24 in support of his latest release, “Amén (The Nomad’s Dream).”

Atlanta-bred singer-songwriter Amain Berhane, known professionally as Berhana, is heading to the Independent in support of his sophomore record, “Amén (The Nomad’s Dream),” released in October. 

After his self-titled EP came out in 2016, his song “Grey Luh” was featured on Donald Glover’s show ‘Atlanta’ and amassed more than 88 million streams. Following the success of his new record, he was recently featured on NPR’s “Tiny Desk” series, where he sang a handful of songs from the project and paid tribute to his Ethiopian roots.

Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake is bringing his tour to the Bay Area.

The 43-year-old boy band veteran is making a comeback with his Forget Tomorrow World Tour, ending a five-year hiatus from the stage. During his run, Timberlake is scheduled to perform in San Jose for two nights, supporting his forthcoming solo album, “Everything I Thought It Was,” set for release on March 15. The album includes the single “Selfish,” which he recently showcased during his musical guest spot on “Saturday Night Live” with host Dakota Johnson.

Mill Valley Music Festival

Fleet Foxes are on the lineup for the Mill Valley Music Festival, which is scheduled for May 11-12.

The third Mill Valley Music Festival, organized by Noise Pop Industries and the Mill Valley Chamber of Commerce, is set to return to Friends Field. The two-day event promises a diverse musical experience with a mix of indie-folk, Americana, R&B and rock performances. Fleet Foxes and Greensky Bluegrass are the headliners, joining San Diego R&B band Thee Sacred Souls, country singer-songwriter Margo Price and rock-and-soul ensemble St. Paul & the Broken Bones on the bill, among others.

Luke Combs

Country singer Luke Combs plans to play Levi’s Stadium on May 17-18.

The country music star is set to perform 25 U.S. shows this year, including two dates at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. The “Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old” tour promises different set lists and support acts each night. 

As Combs’ success continues with his remake of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” from his album “Gettin’ Old” — reaching No. 1 on Billboard’s country airplay chart and No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 — maybe his local stop will make history again with Chapman, a longtime San Francisco resident, by his side.

Punk in the Park 

The Descendents are scheduled to perform at the Punk in the Park festival at Cow Palace.

The Southern California music and craft beer festival will mark its fourth year with the American Road Trip, featuring old-school hard-core and punk acts. But first, it kicks off at Daly City’s Cow Palace. 

The all-ages event includes performances by Descendents, the Vandals, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, the Exploited, T.S.O.L., Adolescents, the Dickies, Dwarves and more. 

Attendees age 21 and older can enjoy more than 100 craft beers from local and regional breweries.

BottleRock Napa Valley & Festival La Onda

Ed Sheeran is slated to headline BottleRock Napa Valley, which is scheduled for May 24-26.

The lux Wine Country music festival over Memorial Day weekend features headliners Stevie Nicks, Pearl Jam, Ed Sheeran and Maná, along with more than 75 diverse acts such as Kali Uchis, Megan Thee Stallion, Queens of the Stone Age and Nelly. Set at the Napa Valley Expo, the three-day event includes regional wine, food, and craft brews, with the Williams Sonoma Culinary Stage hosting cooking demonstrations. 

But for the first time this year, BottleRock Napa Valley will be followed by yet another outdoor music celebration. 

BottleRock producers plan to present Festival La Onda, at the same location the weekend after, offering a mix of genres like reggaetón, cumbia and Latin pop with headliners Maná, Fuerza Regida, Alejandro Fernández and Junior H.

Lizzy McAlpine 

Singer-songwriter Lizzy McAlpine is set to play a night at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium on May 16.

The singer-songwriter is bringing her soul-baring lyricism to the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium as part of her “Older” tour, which is slated to kick off in April and hit North America, Europe and the U.K. 

The Pennsylvania native has been writing music since she was in middle school. Now 24, McAlpine has released two folk-pop albums and signed with RCA Records. In February, she announced her third record, “Older,” set for an April 5 release, and recently collaborated with “Stick Season” singer Noah Kahan and former One Direction member Niall Horan on alternate versions of her songs “Call Your Mom” and “You Could Start a Cult.”

California Roots Music and Arts Festival

Ziggy and Damian Marley are set to perform at California Roots Music and Arts Festival, which is scheduled for May 24-26.

Scheduled for May 24-26, the Monterey festival reunites the Bob Marley clan with headliners Ziggy, Damian “Jr. Gong” and Stephen Marley, alongside a diverse lineup featuring Bay Area rappers E-40 and Too Short, Lupe Fiasco, Ice Cube, Rebelution and more. 

As the largest reggae music festival in Northern California, this year’s Cali Roots expects to receive a boost following the box office success of the biopic “Bob Marley: One Love,” which has grossed more than $120 million globally since its Valentine’s Day release.

Avril Lavigne 

Pop punk princess Avril Lavigne is set to play Shoreline Amphitheatre on May 28 as part of her Greatest Hits Tour.

The queen of punk rock is hitting the road for her Greatest Hits Tour, with one planned stop at Shoreline Amphitheatre. 

After taking a break from the public eye to focus on her personal life and health, Lavigne released her seventh studio album, “Love Sux,” in 2022 and made headlines with her engagement to rapper Mod Sun, who helped produce the record. (The pair called off the engagement last February.) 

Lavigne is expected to play songs from her new record, as well as fan favorites and her biggest hits such as “Girlfriend,” “Complicated” and “Sk8er Boi.” The singer even teased that she would be taking special requests in an Instagram post about the tour.

Girl in Red 

Girl in Red plans to bring her upcoming world tour to the Bay Area on June 1-2.

It’s the calm before the storm for the indie pop artist, who is gearing up for a world tour in support of her sophomore album, “I’m Doing It Again Baby!,” set for an April 12 release. 

The Norwegian singer was the opening act on a handful of dates for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour last summer and is collaborating with Sabrina Carpenter on a track on her upcoming record. Her world tour is scheduled to stop at Oakland’s Fox Theater and San Francisco’s Warfield for a two-night stint in the Bay Area.
