Department watchdogs to investigate federal law enforcement conduct at protests

As demonstrations continue in the wake of George Floyd’s killing in May, the situation in Portland, Ore., remains fraught, with demonstrators again facing off with federal agents overnight.

Here are some significant developments:

  • The Trump administration plans to send Customs and Border Protection tactical officers, who are trained to control riots, to Seattle.
  • The American Civil Liberties Union sued the Trump administration and the Portland police over alleged attacks on street medics at protests.
  • The Justice Department inspector general announced that the actions of federal law enforcement at protests in Portland and Washington, D.C. — including the incident in which officers cleared demonstrators from Lafayette Square in June to make way for the president — will be investigated. The Department of Homeland Security inspector general also will investigate the conduct of Customs and Border Protection agents in Portland.
