Teenager arrested after fatal shooting in West Valley City

Police on Wednesday arrested a 15-year-old boy in connection with a fatal shooting episode in West Valley City.

A 49-year-old man named Charles Baker died at the scene of the Tuesday afternoon shooting. Two others, a man and a teenage boy, were injured in the shooting.

Baker, who is from California, had been staying with people he knew at an apartment complex at 3510 W. Parkway Blvd. (about 2700 South), according to West Valley City police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku.

Two groups had been involved in “some sort of altercation” before the shooting, Vainuku said.

“Were still trying to figure out what exactly happened during the incident,” she said.

A 17-year-old was shot in the torso and a 38-year-old man was shot multiple times. One of them is in critical condition, but Vainuku declined to specify which one.

Police questioned a 15-year-old after the shooting and booked him into juvenile detention.

A woman who lives in a nearby apartment complex said she was in her home when she heard the shots.

“It was like back and forth, back and forth,” said the woman, who identified herself as May D. “At first, I thought it was firecrackers.”

In recent months, she said, gangs have been tagging homes in the area with graffiti.

Investigators haven’t determined whether the shooting was gang-related. Police asked anyone with information about the shooting to call West Valley City police at 801-840-4000.
