If you liked Bridgerton, you might be interested in another steamy 2020 period drama, Sanditon. Much like the hit Netflix Regency romp, Sanditon is set in the turbulent world of the 1810s, when the world was in upheaval and a new, dark romanticism was taking hold of culture. Sanditon shocked Masterpiece on PBS viewers last January with its wild sexuality and dramatic twists. Now, fans of the show’s first season are desperate to “Save Sanditon” for a second season…and potentially welcome Bridgerton fans into their fold?

While Bridgerton is based on Regency romance novels written by modern author Julia Quinn, Sanditon is legendary TV scribe Andrew Davies’s attempt to bring Jane Austen’s final, unfinished novel to life. Davies took his cues from Austen’s own bold ideas — the Sanditon manuscript features her first black heroine and follows new money business folk rather than landed gentry — to tell a scandalous tale set in a seaside resort. Young Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams) is invited to spend her summer in Sanditon when she rescues its main investor from a carriage accident. What she discovers at the resort isn’t just the bracing joys of seaside plunges, but the dark side of human nature. As she slowly falls hard for the seemingly cold Sidney Parker (Theo James), Charlotte also has to navigate a group of scheming (and incestuous) siblings, a lovelorn heiress battling racism, and a sweet friend who may not be as sweet as she seems.

Sanditon Season 1 hooked fans with its sensuality, but was abruptly cancelled by ITV, and then PBS, leaving viewers with jolted by a cliffhanger ending. Still the show is a must-watch for Regency romance nerds and is sure to scratch that Bridgerton itch.

HOW TO WATCH SANDITON FOR FREE

Sanditon is currently available for purchase on Prime Video, Vudu, Google Play, and other VOD platforms.

However, Sanditon is included in two subscription services: the Masterpiece Channel on Prime and PBS’s Passport service for donors.

PBS’s Passport is available to anyone who donates at least $5/month to PBS. You get access to a library of PBS hits including Sanditon, Downton Abbey, and more, plus passes to museums and other perks.

The Masterpiece Channel on Prime features PBS hits like Sanditon and exclusive content like Jamestown.

The Masterpiece Channel on Prime costs $5.99/month after a free 7 day trial. So technically you could sign up for the trial, binge Sanditon, and then cancel the subscription.

WILL THERE BE A SANDITON SEASON 2?

That is what Sanditon fans want to know! Decider has it on good authority from creator Andrew Davies and star Rose Williams that they would be happy to continue Charlotte and Sidney’s story. However, as of today, no streaming service has picked up the uber-popular romance for a second season.

Sanditon fans, known as the Sanditon Sisterhood, have written petitions, stormed social media with #SaveSanditon, and even created sand art for their beloved show. So far there’s been no word on ITV or PBS changing their mind, despite the show’s popularity.

Hey HBO Max, if you gave DC fans the Snyder Cut, maybe give Sanditon fans Sanditon Season 2?
