SPRINGFIELD, VA — A 96-year-old man from Springfield has dashed past a new world record for his age group in running.

Roy Englert broke the record for the 5000m (5K) competition for the men's 95 to 99 age group at the USATF Masters Outdoor Championships on July 11, according to a news release from USA Track & Field. Unofficial results show he finished with a time of 42:30.23, which is nearly eight minutes less than the previous record, 50:10.56 set by Frank Levine in 2009.

Englert also holds records in the 800m and 1500m for his age group. His new record-setting time is pending final approval.
