  • Now Guendouzi's promising start to life at Marseille is threatening to turn sour

Matteo Guendouzi's promising start to life at Marseille could soon turn sour after the Arsenal loanee clashed with one of his team-mates at the weekend, while others are becoming 'fed up' with his antics in training.

The 22-year-old, who joined Marseille on loan from the Gunners earlier this summer, has been praised for his brilliant performances in Ligue 1 so far this season which has also earned him a France call-up in the last international break.

But all that hard work could come undone after the hot-headed Frenchman confronted team-mate Gerson on the pitch during their 3-2 defeat by Lens at the weekend.

The defeat capped off a poor run for the French side in recent weeks, which saw them only pick up a point against 10-man Lokomotiv Moscow in the Europa League, a point against Angers and then falling to defeat at home on Sunday.

Guendouzi particularly struggled during the game, which saw him publicly confront Brazilian midfielder Gerson after Lens' second goal – which saw Dimitri Payet and others try and calm down the situation.

According to French news outlet L’Equipe, Guendouzi approached his team-mate and asked 'when are you going to start running', which has angered a number of other Marseille players in the dressing room.

And while Guendouzi's fiery passion is accepted on the south coast of France, other Marseille players have reportedly grown tired of the midfielder's actions and criticisms during training.

According to French journalist Romain Canuti, Guendouzi is starting to 'grate' on his new team-mates and many of the team's foreign contingent are 'struggling' with the 'way he works'.

He told the Marseille Talk Show for Le Phoceen, as relayed by Foot Radio: 'There's isn't just Gerson who is fed up with Guendouzi.

'That doesn't matter, you don't need to read too much into it, but there are a few players at Marseille who are struggling with Guendouzi.

'His way of working, when he always blames others for things, when he falls to his knees in training to implore God because a touch isn't good enough, it grates.

'I don't blame him for this attitude, we know this type of temperament in Marseille, but there are foreign players who aren't that into it, who have a lot of trouble with that.

'When you've got a guy like that, who always criticises, you might not want to sympathise with him down the line. That being said, Marseille need characters, Guendouzi has some, so that's good too.'

This isn't the first time Guendouzi's attitude has landed him in hot water.

Guendouzi was frozen out by Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta after he was was overheard taunting Brighton's Neal Maupay about his wages – a game in which he was also sent off towards the end of the 2019-20 season.

Sportsmail learned that the midfielder spent the match taunting Brighton players about the financial disparity between the squads.

Guendouzi was also said to be disparaging about the quality of players in the Brighton team.

'He was saying the Brighton players were s*** and that he and his team-mates earn so much more than they ever will,' a source said.

'He's done it in other games as well. Arsenal are a decent club and hate that sort of behaviour.'

Arteta reacted by exiling Guendouzi from first-team training before shipping him out on loan to Hertha, where he made 24 appearances.

The move to Hertha Berlin saw him struggle to find a way back into the Gunners' set-up when he returned, and was instead shipped back out on loan to Marseille.
