Actress Issa Rae took a swipe at Kanye West’s slavery is a “choice” comment while hosting the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards in New York City Monday night.

It all happened with West’s wife, Kim Kardashian, sitting in the audience.

“I’m about as fashionable as Kanye [West] is black — only when it’s convenient,” Rae said, according to USA Today. “That joke was my choice, just like slavery.”

When the 37-year-old reality star took the stage to accept her Influencer Award for her part in the fashion industry, she did not address the attack on her husband and only joked that she was surprised to be honored as she spent most of her time naked.

“I’m kind of shocked I’m getting a fashion award when I’m naked most of the time,” the “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” star said. “It was maybe seven years ago when I had a publicist, and she asked, what were my goals, what were my dreams, and I said I just wanted to be on the cover of a fashion magazine. And she said, ‘let’s (make) some realistic goals because that will never happen.'”

“And so, of course I sent her my Vogue cover when it came out,” she added. “An autographed copy. So it’s really a trip to me that now I’m here getting an award for fashion when it’s something I always loved. Thank you so much for this, it means a lot.”

The “slavery” comment was a reference to the 40-year-old rapper’s statement that “when you hear about slavery for 400 years. For 400 years?! That sounds like a choice” during an appearance last month on TMZ Live.
