Meg Myers Earns First Career Billboard No. 1 With ‘Running Up That Hill’ Remake

“Running Up That Hill,” her cover of Kate Bush‘s classic ’80s song, rises 2-1 on the all-rock-format Rock Airplay survey dated Jan. 25. The song earned 8.4 million audience impressions in the tracking week ending Jan. 19, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.
Its run up that hill was quite lengthy: It rules the chart in its 29th week, tying for the third-longest rise to No. 1 in the list’s 10-year history. The record belongs to Fitz and the Tantrums, whose “Out of My League” reigned at last in its 33rd frame in October 2013.
“Running Up That Hill” reigns thanks to support on both alternative and adult alternative radio, as it scores a new No. 2 high on the Alternative Songs chart and bullets at No. 27 on Adult Alternative Songs after reaching No. 26.
The track’s at 41-week rise to No. 2 on Alternative Songs marks the longest ever to the top two, exceeding flora cash’s “You’re Somebody Else,” which reached No. 2 in its 35th week on the chart dated Feb. 9, 2019.

“Running Up That Hill” is the first new No. 1 on Rock Airplay in 2020. Myers is also the first act to score a first No. 1 on the ranking since Lana Del Rey, and the song is the first cover to rule since Del Rey’s, as the latter’s rendition of Sublime‘s “Doin’ Time” reigned for six weeks beginning in September 2019.
The track is far and away Myers’ highest-charting Rock Airplay entry; in three previous appearances, she reached a No. 26 best with “Sorry” in June 2015.
Bush’s original “Running Up That Hill” hit No. 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 dated Nov. 30, 1985, and remains her highest-charting single among four career Hot 100 entries. After Alternative Songs launched in 1988, she scored four top 10s on the survey through 1993.
