Police Charge Ex-Timberwolves Employee With Theft of Executive’s Hard Drive

Police in Minnesota charged ex-Minnesota Timberwolves employee Somak Sarkar with third-degree burglary Monday in connection with his alleged theft of a team executive’s hard drive.

Sarkar, 33, is currently being held with a bail amount of $40,000 and is set to appear in Hennepin County court Thursday afternoon.

Timberwolves executive vice president of basketball operations Sachin Gupta discovered last month that his work hard drive—containing sensitive information such as his tax returns and player contracts—had been stolen out of his office, per a criminal complaint filed Wednesday and detailed by Paul Walsh of the Star Tribune.

The team traced the alleged theft to Sarkar and fired him shortly thereafter, per the complaint.

The saga followed Gupta’s reassignment of Sarkar—who had previously worked with the team’s coaching staff—in the summer of 2023.

Gupta, 42, has worked for the Timberwolves since 2019.

Minnesota is currently 47–22, third in the Western Conference and a game behind the first-place Oklahoma City Thunder.
