Trump says he will return to Georgia to campaign for GOP Senate candidates

President Trump said he will return to Georgia, despite continuing to challenge the state’s election results, to rally for two Republican Senate candidates on the eve of a runoff election next month that will determine which party controls the chamber.

“As badly as we were treated in Georgia by the ‘Republican’ Governor and ‘Republican’ Secretary of State, we must have a massive victory for two great people, @KLoeffler & @sendavidperdue, on January 5th. I will be having a big Rally for them on Monday night, January 4th. WIN!,” the president posted on Twitter near midnight Saturday.

The Jan. 5 election pits Democratic candidates Jon Ossoff and the Rev. Raphael Warnock against Republican incumbents Sens. David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler, respectively.

If Ossoff and Warnock win, the Senate would be split 50-50 with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris poised to cast any tie-breaking votes.

Trump stumped for Perdue and Loeffler earlier this month, telling a crowd of supporters in Valdosta, Georgia, that while the 2020 presidential election was “rigged” they must turn out and vote for Perdue and Loeffler.

“We can fight for the presidency, and we can fight for these two great Senators, and we can do it at the same time,” Trump said on Dec. 5.

He has slammed Gov. Brian Kemp and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger for not doing enough to prove his claims that the election in the Peach State was rife with fraud.

Besides the election, state officials have conducted two separate recounts and both affirmed that President-elect Joe Biden won.

Biden, who campaigned for Ossoff and Warnock last week in Atlanta, was the first Democrat to win Georgia since Bill Clinton in 1992.
