7 new Covid deaths in Onondaga County: ‘Today is a tough day’

Syracuse, N.Y. – Onondaga County today reported seven deaths from the novel coronavirus since Tuesday, bringing total deaths since March to 489.

“Today is a tough day,’' County Executive Ryan McMahon said on Twitter, repeating a sentiment he has expressed almost daily for the past month. More than half of the county’s deaths have occurred since Dec. 1.

Four of the most recent victims died in hospitals, including three women (ages 79, 77 and 66) and a 54-year-old man. The other three people died in nursing homes and county officials had no further information about them.

McMahon said there were 293 new cases of Covid-19 confirmed since Tuesday, up 16 from the day before.

There were 298 patients with Covid-19 in hospitals today, down six from Tuesday. Of those, 48 are in intensive care.

The average positive test rate for the past seven days was 8.3%, county officials said.
