Gutted Building In Danger Of Collapse
Firefighters battling a 3-alarm fire in San Leandro Friday night remained at the scene until Saturday afternoon.
SAN LEANDRO, CA —A three-alarm fire that tore through an upholstery shop Friday night in San Leandro was fully contained on Saturday afternoon, but officials are now concerned the building might collapse.
No injuries were reported in the blaze, first reported about 8:30 p.m. Friday at Knops Upholstery Inc., 460 East 14th St.
The structure is unstable and both city building officials and firefighters are worried the building could collapse, according to Alameda County Fire Department spokeswoman Aisha Knowles.

The blaze was declared fully contained shortly after noon Saturday and firefighters were released from the scene. Custody of the building has been transferred to the City of San Leandro, Knowles said.

Seven people were displaced by the fire, including some who were living in a duplex directly behind the shop, Knowles said.
Two adjacent businesses damaged by the fire were Fashion City, a clothing store at 462 East 14th St., and Sweet Fingers Restaurant at 464 East 14th St., Knowles said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Officials say the blaze started in the rear corner of the upholstery shop.
