Former Mets hitting coach Tom Robson dies at 75

Tom Robson, the Mets’ hitting coach during much of manager Bobby Valentine’s tenure, passed away according to a tweet from Valentine. He was 75.

“The best hitting coach and friend any team could have has left us today,” Valentine tweeted before the Mets’ 3-1 loss to the Cubs Tuesday night at Wrigley Field. “Thank you for everything Tom Robson. I could not have done it without you. U were the best!!!”

Robson was fired as hitting coach in June 1999, but returned for the following season, in which the Mets advanced to the World Series.

He served as Valentine’s bench coach in 2002.
