Life celebration set for South Jersey state Sen. Jim Whelan

A celebration of life for State Sen. Jim Whelan will be held Thursday, Sept. 14, in Atlantic City, the state senator's office announced Monday. Sen. Whelan died Tuesday, Aug. 22, of a heart attack at age 68.

Sen. Whelan's family will receive the public from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Boardwalk Hall, 2301 Boardwalk. There will be tributes from invited dignitaries from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.

A West Philadelphia native and Temple University graduate whose role on the Atlantic City Beach Patrol as a teenager helped spawn a long career there as a city councilman and mayor, Sen. Whelan was known as a tireless advocate for Atlantic City. He went on to become a New Jersey assemblyman and senator.

Sen. Whelan was a public-school teacher in the Atlantic City School District for more than 20 years before entering politics.
