Man, 21, charged with unsafe lane change in crash that killed mom, daughter

JEFFERSON -- The 21-year-old driver of the Mercedes involved in a double fatal crash last week is facing a motor vehicle charge, police said.

Scott Breitz, of Jefferson, was issued a motor vehicle summons on Wednesday for an unsafe lane change violation in connection with the April 19 crash on Berkshire Valley Road, Detective Joseph Kratzel said in a news release.

Alicia Montello was driving eastbound on Berkshire Valley Road between Solar and Taylor roads at about 4:29 p.m. when her Toyota Corolla was struck head-on by Breitz's 1990 Mercedes 560, Kratzel said.

Montello and her mother Darlene Gindhart, 52, both of the Stockholm section of Hardystown Township, were pronounced dead at the scene, Kratzel said.

Breitz was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, he said.

Any witnesses may contact Officer Roger Davis at 973-697-1300.
