"TAG Heuer has a fantastic history, so when we reached out to them. It didn't take a lot of convincing," explains Hodinkee COO Eneuri Acosta. "They were very welcoming to the idea of this type of project, and they gave us access to their library, the entire catalog of watches. I think that up until 2008 or 2009, whether this watch existed was still in question. It's just such a rare watch that not a lot of people knew about, and we thought it would be a nice fun piece to bring back."

The Intrepid (R) in the 1967 America\'s Cup.

Based on a super scarce Heuer reference 7754 from 1967, the Skipper was first commissioned for the winning yacht "Intrepid" that took home the America's Cup trophy that very same year. Little information is known about the initial production — perhaps only as few as 50 pieces of this style of sports watch with a regatta timer using a case "borrowed" from the Carrera were made — hence inheriting the phenomenal nickname the "Skipperera."

Hodinkee's Acosta elaborates: "Less than 20 have ever been accounted for. We only know of about 12 that are in existence right now that we've seen. We have one here at the office that Heuer provided from their museum [located in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland], and it's just such a stunning piece. It's just absolutely beautiful." So rare, in fact, word has it that the ref.7754 has traded hands for upwards of $30,000 in the private market.

The key design detail of the new Skipper is the eye-catching tri-color regatta counter subdial found at 9 o'clock, a special countdown feature (updated from 15- to 10-minute intervals) that enables sailors to keep track of minutes needed to get into starting line position at the beginning of a race. The royal blue sunray dial mirrors ref. 7754, with the handy bonus of a date window, giving reference to a vintage Heuer Carrera "Dato 45."

A limited edition of only 125 pieces, each watch is individually numbered on the sapphire caseback, and comes with a set of three additional straps: gray and orange NATOs, and a TAG Heuer blue perforated strap. "It wears quite nice; the 39-millimeter size is perfect for daily wear. It's not too big on the wrist, it doesn't look overly chunky—and if you put it on the orange NATO that it comes with, or the optional distressed moss green strap, it's such a playful watch, especially for this time of year," raves Acosta.

"And what Hodinkee tries to do... We try to make watches for enthusiasts, but we also want to be cognizant of the fact that we want to provide a watch that is accessible to folks," Acosta continues. "This particular watch with Heuer, at the price-point for what you get, the rich story that comes with it, and the attention to detail that went into the design of the watch—that's something that we always keep in mind as well, that we want to create something that people have access to."

So big deal if you have to cancel that weekend share and plan for a few more at home "stay-cations" to swing it. No matter where you end up spending summer 2017, just think how fantastic the blue dial Skipper is going to look on your tan wrist paired with a glass of rosé. Get moving!
