SmartHalo turns your bike into a smart bike

We’ve got smartphones, smartwatches, and almost every device in the home is now smart. So why not your bike too?

That’s the idea behind SmartHalo. It’s a device you fit to your handlebars and that communicates with your phone over Bluetooth. It acts as a satnav, light and alarm.

It fits to your handlebars with a military-grade locking mechanism, so no thieves will make off with it. Should someone try and tamper with your bike, it’ll sound an alarm, alerting passersby.

The turn-by-turn navigation should come in very handy. Type in your destination on your phone using the app, and SmartHalo lights up telling you which way to go. The right side of the circle lights up telling you to turn right, and flashes when it’s time to turn. Need to pull a U-turn? The bottom half will flash red.

The app also tells you where you parked, in case you forget.

It records your cycling stats too, like time, distance, average speed, calories burned and elevation. You can also log your rides on a map to see exactly where you went.

It alerts you to incoming calls, and gives you weather warnings, so you can put on your waterproof layer before venturing out. Have a Brompton or a BMX? No need to worry, it fits any bike.

It’s passed its funding goal and will ship in May next year. It will retail for $149 (£96).
