Young Frankenstein to screen in over 500 theaters with live Mel Brooks intro

Horses will be whinnying around the country on Oct. 5. Why? Because Fathom Events and Twentieth Century Fox announced Tuesday that comedy classic Young Frankenstein will return to more than 500 theaters on that date in a special, one-night-only presentation with a live intro by the film’s director Mel Brooks. The legendary filmmaker will reminisce about the film’s star Gene Wilder, who died in August, and also tour the Twentieth Century Fox lot, where much of the film was made.

In addition to Young Frankenstein, Brooks worked with Wilder on The Producers and Blazing Saddles. But the 1974 horror-comedy, which Brooks and Wilder co-wrote, holds a special place in the director’s heart.

“I hate actors,” Brooks told EW in 2007. “But [on Young Frankenstein] I had lunch with them every day, because I liked that cast so much, between Madeline Kahn, and Teri Garr, Marty Feldman, and Gene, Peter Boyle. We had a magnificent company of players. I felt like an old-fashioned English theater manager taking a cast out into the country.”

The Young Frankenstein screenings begin at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT Oct. 5. Tickets are available for purchase at the Fathom Events website.

The film will also be celebrated in an illustrated book with a foreword by Judd Apatow, Young Frankenstein: A Mel Brooks Book: The Making of the Film. The book, published by Black Dog & Leventhal, arrives Oct. 18.
