VictoryLand to reopen in September, owner expects to hire 200 workers before opening

Today, Milton McGregor and Tuskegee Mayor Johnny Ford announced that VictoryLand will reopen next month.

The electronic bingo hall was closed after a 2013 raid. In April, the Alabama Supreme Court allowed the state to keep 1,615 gambling machines and $263,000 seized in that raid.

"While it has taken longer than we hoped, the time is now here and we are pleased that hundreds of our people will have a new job and VictoryLand will be generating a badly needed shot in the arm for Tuskegee and this entire region of Alabama," McGregor said today.

Macon County officials said earlier this year that the casino's closing crippled the area's economy.

The bingo hall and its food and beverage areas will reopen on September 13 at 2:00 p.m. Ford and McGregor said VictoryLand will offer more than 500 electronic bingo machines.

"It is now time to get the doors open and put people back to work and to start paying charities and taxes. So much effort has been put forward by so many and we are glad that this day is finally here. VictoryLand has cleared all legal and regulatory hurdles," Sheriff Andre Brunson said.

In April, the state overturned Montgomery County Circuit Judge William Shashy's 2015 ruling, which said Macon County had legalized the games in a 2003 constitutional amendment allowing charity bingo.

McGregor and Ford said that the facility will hire more than 200 people before VictoryLand's opening next month, and hundreds more will be hired this fall.

Previously, McGregor said he had received about 4,000 job applications.

McGregor said that there will be "exciting announcements" about additions to the facility in the next few months.

"Our goal is to get open, build our business back to where it was before it was illegally closed, and then begin to reopen all areas previously open like our hotel and four-star restaurant."
