Prince Andrew is facing calls for an inquiry amid claims he acted as a fixer in a multi-million deal in Kazakhstan.

The royal had been in line for a £4million payout if the deal for a foreign consortium had gone through, The Mail reports.

It is claimed he used his position to get a £385million venture off the ground while he was working as a special trade envoy for Britain.

The deal later fell through due to unrest in the oil-rich country. Former Liberal Democrat MP Norman Baker said: ‘Prince Andrew’s continuing close relationship with questionable figures in Kazakhstan brings the Royal Family into disrepute.

‘There are also serious questions about a conflict of interest in his former role as trade envoy which on the face of it seems to be more about enriching himself than helping the UK.’

The prince reportedly helped Greek water firm EYDAP and Swiss finance business Aras Capital bid for contracts for water and sewage networks.

It is claimed he used his relationship with Kazakh oligarch Kenges Rakishev to lend a hand.

The deal fell through in 2011 after police opened fire on striking oil workers, killing 14.

EYDAP pulled out, fearing unrest.

Graham Smith, who heads anti-monarchy organisation Republic, called for an inquiry.

He said: ‘On the face of it this appears to represent a clear abuse of Andrew’s position as trade envoy.’

The Mail said the Palace instructed a law firm to block publication of an email between the prince and Mr Rakishev on behalf of the two companies in April 2011, saying it was a breach of the royal’s privacy.
