Looks like all the well-wishers had it right.

Football player Michael Sam and Vito Cammisano are engaged—and Sam was the one who popped the question!

"@Vitcamm Thank you for saying yes," the standout college athlete, who last year became the first openly gay male to be drafted by the NFL, tweeted today, finally personally confirming reports that he and Cammisano were planning to tie the knot. Sam shared a photo from the proposal moment, accenting his tweet with several diamond ring emojis.

Aw, congratulations (again!) you two!

In addition to making pro-sports history, Sam also made headlines on draft day when ESPN showed footage of his celebratory kiss with Cammisano after he found out the St. Louis Rams had selected him in the seventh round.

And the romance continues, with Sam opting to propose atop St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, the famous view spread out behind them as the athlete got down on one knee and put a ring on his college sweetheart.

Cammisano then followed up with his own post-proposal pic in which he's happily flashing his ring just seconds later.

Looking at Sam and Cammisano's Twitter accounts, the couple really made the rounds, visiting Italy, Spain and England and sharing photos from their various stops. Congratulations started pouring in on Twitter earlier this month, but this is the first time that Sam has acknowledged that the betrothal reports are true.

Meanwhile, on the home front, Sam is still looking for a locker room to hang his helmet. He was ultimately cut by the Rams, then picked up for the Dallas Cowboys practice squad, but then the Cowboys waived him in October.
