Euclid football player was released from hospital before dying

Andre Jackson

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Euclid football player who died after being injured in a game against Solon was released from the hospital Saturday, only to be returned Sunday, hospital officials said.

Andre Jackson, 17, was rushed to University Hospitals Medical Center Friday after suffering an undisclosed injury during the game.

Jackson was brought to UH's Ahuja Medical Center and released Saturday morning, hospital officials said. He was brought to UH's Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital Sunday evening, where he died, the hospital said.

The hospital said in a statement they are conducting a full review of his care and will be meeting with Jackson's family.

"We express our deepest sympathy to Andre's family," a statement from the hospital says.

Jackson was a junior fullback and outside linebacker for the Panthers. His cause of death is being determined by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner.

Jackson was trying to recover a short kickoff after a Solon score in the second quarter of Euclid's 33-13 loss to the Comets. Jackson went for the ball near the Euclid sideline around the 30-yard-line.

Jackson never lost consciousness on the field, according to Euclid schools spokeswoman Audrey Holzman.

Staff members at Friday's game tended to Jackson for several minutes before helping him off the turf at Solon's Stewart Field.

"It was a normal play," Holzman said. "It was nothing out of the ordinary at the time."

Grief counselors are being made available to students at both schools.

Holzman said Euclid's homecoming game Friday against Strongsville will be played as scheduled. There will be a moment of silence and balloon release before to the start of the game, Holzman said.
