If you're familiar with J. Cole, then you know the he spends a lot of time talking about the ills of mass incarceration, particularly on his most recently released project, 4 Your Eyez Only

The arena leg of his tour kicks off with a powerful visual—he's escorted on stage by an army of cops, while wearing an orange jumpsuit. Further illustrating his diligence in shedding light on the prison industrial complex, J. Cole spent the day visiting inmates who are serving life sentences at one of America's most notorious prisons, San Quentin. Dreamville president,  Ibrahim “Ib” Hamad and Dreamville's art director, Felton Brown were there for the visit as well.

“We got the opportunity to spend the day at San Quentin State Prison talking and meeting inmates who will never see the outside again,” Hamad wrote on Instagram, captioning a photo of him and Cole standing with a group of inmates. “That experience was a life changing experience and wish I had the ability to put that in a caption but that wouldn’t be doing it justice."

Brown also shared his experience at San Quentin on Instagram.

“One of the most moving moments since this new journey,” Brown wrote. “Spent a day with some brothers who stories go unheard behind the wall. Learned a lot, so much work to be done. This system will try to not give you a voice but we’re listening.”
