If you're a human being with a pulse, you might have someone you loosely consider to be "the one that got away." Maybe you wish things ended differently and you wish you could go back and change it, but sigh, you can't. A recent AskReddit thread prompted users to reveal what happened when they actually did reconnect with those people and the results are super interesting.

1. They realized they didn't care as much as they thought they did. Swimbikerunrun said when he saw his ex, all of the romantic nostalgia they had wore off pretty quickly. He explains: "We loved the memories of each other, but we were not what the other person thought anymore. And that was okay."

2. It was surprisingly uncomfortable. Macdees13 says he'd always been heartbroken over his high-school sweetheart who left him for another guy, but then about five years later, he ran into her at a bar. The two agreed to meet for coffee, and he said he couldn't tell if he had changed or she had changed, but he was able to "just put that stuff away for good. She was no longer my Great White Buffalo."

3. They reconnected and became inseparable. Faceboxa says he broke up with his partner once she moved to college. Then one day, he noticed she'd moved back to town and they met for coffee. Facefoxa says: "I hit her up for coffee and it was like no time at all had passed. We will be celebrating two years in a few weeks."

4. They tried to rekindle things but ended up friends. Zacjohn466 says things with his high-school girlfriend were tumultuous, but after several years passed, she told him she always wondered what might have been. He'd wondered the same, so they tried to rekindle their relationship, but they quickly remembered why it didn't work before. He says: "We mutually agreed that we should just stay friends, but us as a couple wouldn't work. It didn't work out like a movie would, but I gained a good friend I had lost."

5. They had feelings but just had to let them go. Rufus_von_Barkstien says he saw his ex at an event not long ago and while he still had feelings for her, he was just happy to see she was doing well.

6. They got in a fight. Shermometer said his ex called him after she'd married a man she'd only met two weeks prior to get his advice on the situation. He told her she was nuts, she didn't like hearing that, and he said he was "immediately relieved of my feelings of longing."

7. They got married. Lrauka said his ex came to visit his city 10 years after they'd broken up and sent him a text to meet up for coffee. They've now been together five years now, married for two, and have a baby together.

8. They kissed and it wasn't a good idea. Lights-0n says she ran into her one who got away, and he kissed her even though he was taken. She says: "I slapped him on instinct and never spoke to him again."

9. They still hated each other. Whatbeard says he saw his ex who dumped him three years prior at the bar he had gotten her the job at. She pulled up a stool and said she had married and gotten pregnant in less than a year after leaving him. When he asked why she had left him, she said she didn't know and wouldn't explain. He adds: "She seemed amused at the fact that I had spiraled .... It was the most infuriating and audacious thing I have ever seen."

10. They ended up working together again and fell in love again. Reepthecreep says his relationship ended once they came back from deployment and went their separate ways. Then three years later, they were reunited through a second tour. He explains: "A couple months in I decided to finally tell her how I felt. Two and a half years later and we're still sharing the same bed."
