House of the Week: A wine lover's paradise in Syracuse's Sedgwick neighborhood

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Francis Lombardi's favorite room in his house is the kitchen.

There's a five-burner range, double ovens and a separate warming oven, all stainless steel. The floating island, ample counter space and cabinets offer lots of room for him and his wife, Angela, to cook.

The kitchen leads to a small dining area and the library, Lombardi's other favorite room in the house. The wood fireplace and dark wood walls help create the perfect setting to enjoy a classic book, a peaty Scotch or a fine cigar.

"The whole ambiance is very nice," he said.

A massive wet bar near the kitchen provides the ideal space to hold all your wine glasses and barware.

In the basement sits the wine cellar, the doors of which were from the old L.C. Smith mansion on James Street. The vault is filled with wines from Chateau Esperanza, the Keuka Lake vineyard that the Lombardis owned from the late-1970s to mid-1980s.

The brick colonial home was built in 1930 in the historic Sedgwick Farms district. The Lombardis bought it in 1970 and raised their six children in the home.

"The neighborhood is great," Lombardi said. "It's still one of the premier places to live in the city."

Francis' brother, Tarky Jr., was a New York State Senator from 1966 to 1992.

The Lombardis currently split their time between Syracuse and Florida and are looking to downsize from the five-bedroom, seven-bathroom house.

When they come back to Syracuse for the summer, they'll stay with their children.

"It's payback time," Francis Lombardi said, with a laugh.
