The death of Cecil has inspired many reactions but perhaps this could be the best from bobbies on the Isles of Scilly.

Police officers from the islands force have decided to name the herring gulls that live on and around the Scilly Isles protecting them from potential hunters.

The logical reason for this odd decision is that anyone that kills an animal with a human name risks becoming a ‘social pariah’ – as only American dentist Walter Palmer can tell you.

Here’s what they wrote on the force’s popular Facebook page: ‘If the news has taught us anything this week it’s don’t hunt animals with names unless you desire to be a social pariah.

‘In light of this and the recent vilification of Herring Gulls, I have taken to naming all our avian friends around Scilly.

‘I feel it adds an element of anthropomorphic mischief to the debate around our cohabitation with these marvellous animals.’

In addition, these police officers used the post to target real villains – thieves stealing fuel from boats in anchorage near where the Herring gulls like to float about.
