Narragansett releases fifth beer inspired by horror writer H.P. Lovecraft
The White Ship White IPA pays homage to the Providence native.
Earlier this week, Narragansett Brewery announced the release of its new White Ship White IPA, the fifth installment in the Rhode Island brewery’s Lovecraft Series.
The brews in the Lovecraft series are, both in beer style and can design, based on stories by famed horror writer and lifelong Providence, Rhode Island, resident H.P. Lovecraft. This latest release honors The White Ship, Lovecraft’s tale of a lighthouse keeper’s adventure on a mystical white ship.
“The White Ship is one of my personal favorite Lovecraft stories. It’s the perfect combination of obscurity, curiosity, and a desire to search out the unknown,” said Narragansett president Mark Hellendrung in a press release. “For us, we have wanted to explore a White IPA for a while. It’s a style that lends itself to blurring guidelines and pushing creative boundaries, much like H.P. Lovecraft himself.”
Rhode Island artist Pete McPhee designed the ale’s label, which includes an image of the story’s gray lighthouse pointing north in a compass rose. The design “represents the narrator’s trip to the other world and back,” according to the release.
The White IPA is a 6.8 percent AV beer that combines an IPA’s crispness with a Belgian’s “yeast profile,” and features a tangerine flavor from the El Dorado and Mandarina Bavarian hops. It’s currently sold in six packs of 16-ounce tallboy cans, priced between $11.99 and $12.99.
The Lovecraft series previously included the Lovecraft Honey Ale, the Innsmouth Olde Ale, the Reanimator Helles Lager, and the I Am Providence Imperial Red Ale.
