Sierra/Affinity has secured more than 30 territories for the upcoming Matthew McConaughey-starrer Gold, with the film proving to be one of the major hits at this year’s European Film Market.
StudioCanal has taken the film for all of its markets — the U.K., France, Germany, Australia and New Zealand — while Eagle Pictures and Leone Film Group have Italian rights.

Elsewhere, Gold has gone to Feel Good Entertainment (Greece), Myndform (Iceland), Scanbox Entertainment (Scandinavia), Ascot Elite (Switzerland), Tripictures (Spain), Sun Distribution (Latin America), Apsara (Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand), Able Entertainment (South Korea), Tohokushinsha Film (Japan), United King (Israel), Eagle Films (The Middle East), Tanwee (Turkey), ACME (The Baltics), Freeman/Monolith/Blitz (Czech, Former Yugoslavia, Poland, Romania), Tandem Film (Bulgaria), Lusomundo (Portugal) and Remain in Light (Benelux).

Directed by Oscar-winner Stephen Gaghan, the film is inspired by the true story of a modern-day prospector, Walsh, played by McConaughey. Desperate for a lucky break, he teams up with a similarly eager geologist in order to find gold in deepest, darkest Indonesia, sparking an adventure that goes right through to the boardrooms of Wall Street. It is based on the Bre-X mining scandal of 1997.

The film is being produced by Teddy Schwarzman (The Imitation Game) via his Black Bear Pictures banner, Michael Nozik through his Hwy 61 shingle, McConaughey and writers Patrick Massett and John Zinman. Hwy 61 partner Paul Haggis will exec produce with Richard Middleton.
Principal photography is slated to commence in June with Thailand, New York and New Mexico among the locations. Black Bear Pictures is fully financing the film.
Gold is also generating keen interest among U.S. buyers, with CAA repping domestic rights.
