Donald Trump vs. Hillary Clinton latest presidential poll: On eve of first debate, who is winning?

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are virtually tied going into the first presidential debate.

The race for the White House is virtually tied going into the first presidential debate.

A Washington Post-ABC News poll released early Sunday has Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton leading Republican candidate Donald Trump by 2 points among those who said they'd likely cast a vote in the November general election. The poll's margin of error is 4.5 percent, meaning the two candidates are virtually tied.

Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson was at 5 percent in the poll; Green Party nominee Jill Stein was at 1 percent. Neither Johnson nor Stein reached the national 15 percent polling threshold to participate in the first presidential debate.

The debate will be held Monday night at New York's Hofstra University. It's schedule for 9-10:30 p.m. Eastern Time without commercial breaks.

Clinton's numbers fall

The most recent poll numbers are the latest to show a drop for Clinton in the wake of concerns over her health and vigorous attacks by Trump. In August, the Post poll had Clinton leading Trump by 8 points among likely voters and another conducted earlier in September had her ahead by 5 points.

Among registered voters, Clinton and Trump are locked in a tie at 41 percent each, with Johnson at 7 percent and Stein at 2 percent. In a two way race, 49 percent of registered voters said they favor Clinton and 46 said they were voting for Trump, according to the Post poll.

The poll of 834 registered voters was conducted Sept. 19-22.

Who is ahead in the race for the White House?

The tightening presidential race is reflected in the average of national polls.

RealClearPolitics's polling average gives Clinton a 2.2 percent edge over Trump. The margins among the polls swing dramatically, however, with the NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll giving Clinton a 6 point edge and the Rasmussen Report showing Trump 5 points ahead.

The RCP polling average has Clinton at 42.3 percent; Trump at 40.1 percent; Johnston at 8.3 percent; and Stein at 2.7 percent.
