SAM Gilbert Rodrigo, the hurdler from Daanbantayan town, northern Cebu who made waves in this year’s Central Visayas Regional Athletics Association (CVIRAA) meet, is closer to fulfilling his dream of becoming either a policeman or a seaman.

This after the 16-year-old bet from the Daanbantayan National High School was offered a scholarship grant by the athletics powerhouse University of Cebu (UC).

Rodrigo ruled the 110-meter hurdles event in the CVIRAA that led him to a stint in the 2016 Palarong Pambansa.

Rodrigo said he will be joining the UC team once he is in college. He will still be finishing his high school in Daanbantayan.

“Sa college pa ko muduwa. Dinhi lang sa nako humanon ang high school kay mingawon ko’s akong pamilya” said Rodrigo. (I’ll start playing with UC in college. I’ll finish first my high school here because I’ll be missing my family.)

Rodrigo, in an interview with Cebu Daily News after the CVIRAA earlier this year, said he is using his sports skills to find his father who he hasn’t met yet. He hopes that his future stint with the Webmasters would brighten his chances of finally meeting his father.

“Wala pa gihapon ko nawagtangan og paglaum,” Rodrigo said. (I still haven’t lost hope.)
