This is the third piece in a four-part column series with predictions for the 89th Academy Awards. Week one predicted the acting categories and last week was for Best Directing. For this week, the predictions are every other category not including Best Picture and the writing categories.

Next Sunday, Feb. 26, the predictions for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay will be out. That night, the Oscars ceremony will start at 7:30 p.m. on ABC. The first three categories listed here, Cinematography, Film Editing and Production Design, are all probably going to go for "La La Land." The film is technically sound across the board and with all of the praise it has been garnering, it wouldn't be a surprise for the Academy to give it a clean sweep in these categories. Cinematography Nominees: • "Arrival" • "La La Land" • "Moonlight" • "Lion" • "Silence" Prediction: "La La Land." Film Editing Nominees: • "Arrival" • "Hacksaw Ridge" • "Hell or High Water" • "La La Land" • "Moonlight" Prediction: "La La Land." Production Design Nominees: • "La La land" • "Arrival" • "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" • "Hail, Caesar!" • "Passengers" Prediction: "La La Land." Similar to the technical categories, it's also very likely that the music categories will go to "La La Land." The film is a musical and its associated score and songs have been met with critical acclaim. Original Score Nominees: • "Jackie" • "La La Land" • "Lion" • "Moonlight" • "Passengers" Prediction: "La La Land." Original Song Nominees: • "The Fools Who Dream" from "La La Land" • "City of Stars" from "La La Land" • "How Far I'll Go" from "Moana" • "Can't Stop the Feeling" from "Trolls" • "The Empty Chair from" from "JIM: The james Foley Story" Prediction: "City of Stars" from "La La Land." Animated Feature Nominees: • "Zootpia" • "Moana" • "Kubo and the Two Strings" • "Zucchini" • "The Red Turtle" Prediction: "Zootopia" - This race has tightened up somewhat in the last few weeks with "Kubo and the Two Strings" and "Moana" picking up momentum. Still, this is a very likely win for "Zootopia." Costume Design Nominees: • "Jackie" • "Allied" • "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" • "Florence Foster Jenkins" • "La La Land" Prediction: "Jackie" - The film about First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy should pick up the win here. In terms of costumes, the movie got every single aspect right, an important thing to do in a film about a major moment in American history. Everything from Kennedy's well known clothes worn the day of the assassination to what she had on during the tour of the White House were masterfully recreated and should get recognition from the Academy. Documentary Feature Nominees: • "O.J.: Made in America" • "13th" • "Life, Animated" • "Fire at Sea" • "I Am Not Your Negro" Prediction: "O.J. Made in America" - The multi-part documentary has earned numerous accolades in the months leading to Oscar Sunday and it will likely snag the Academy Award, too. "13th" may give it a run for its money and the Academy could be iffy since this could be considered a 'TV movie,' but it still has a tremendous chance. Makeup/Hairstyling Nominees: • "A Man Called Ove" • "Star Trek Beyond" • "Suicide Squad" Prediction: "Star Trek Beyond" - My prediction here is based on how many characters needed makeup and hairstyling just to exist within the film's universe. A well known fact of "Star Trek" is how many alien races are featured and "Beyond" was no different. Because of the amount of work put in, the sci-fi film should snag a win. Sound Editing Nominees: • "Arrival" • "Deepwater Horizon" • "Hacksaw Ridge" • "La La Land" • "Sully" Prediction: "Hacksaw Ridge" - The Academy has often went with war films for sound editing and it will likely be the case here. The horrors of war are put on full display here by the sound work in "Hacksaw Ridge" and it will probably take the Oscar. Sound Mixing Nominees: • "Arrival" • "Hacksaw Ridge" • "La La Land" • "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" • "13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi" Prediction: "La La Land" - The Hollywood love-letter likely gets the nod in the mixing category, especially thanks to its superb final sequence. Visual Effects Nominees: • "Deepwater horizon" • "Doctor Strange" • "The Jungle Book" • "Kubo and the Two Strings" • "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" Prediction: "The Jungle Book" - While all of the films here have a shot here, my guess is the Academy will side with "The Jungle Book." The film amazingly created not just lifelike animals (ones that could talk for that matter) but an entire jungle setting and did so with visual effects. Documentary Short Nominees: • "4.1 Miles" • "Extremis" • "Joe's Violin" • "Watani: My Homeland" • "The White Helmets" Prediction: "The White Helmets." Live Action Short Film Nominees: • "Ennemis Interiurs" • "La Femme et Le TGV" • "Silent Nights" • "Sing" • "Timecode" Prediction: "Timecode." Animated Short Film • "Blind Vaysha" • "Borrowed Time" • "Pear Cider and Cigarettes" • "Pearl" • "Piper" Prediction: "Piper." Foreign Language Film Nominees: • "Land of Mine" • "A Man Called Ove" • "The Salesman" • "Tanna" • "Toni Erdmann" Prediction: "Toni Erdmann from Germany."This is the third piece in a four-part column series with predictions for the 89th Academy Awards. Week one predicted the acting categories and last week was for Best Directing. For this week, the predictions are every other category not including Best Picture and the writing categories.
