James Foley was an American photojournalist, born in 1973 Rochester, New Hampshire. Foley reported extensively throughout Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya. In 2011 he published an article in the Boston Globe, describing his experience in captivity at the hands of Libyan rebels. While reporting for the Global Post in November 2012 he was captured by Islamist rebels in Taftanaz, northern Syria. Foley was killed on 20 August 2014 by Islamic extremist militant group Islamic State as video of his exectution began circulating online. Film make and one time colleague Matthew VanDyke was among many to pay tribute to his commitment to journalism. Parents Diane and John said they had nothing but admiration for their 'extraordinary' son, who they say "gave his life to expose the suffering of the Syrian people."
