Ex-Rutgers football player reportedly rejects plea deal in robbery cases

NEW BRUNSWICK -- A former Rutgers football players charged in three robberies turned down a plea deal last week that would have sent him to prison for 15 years, according to a report.

Tejay Johnson, 24, of Egg Harbor Township, instead will stand trial and could be sent to prison for 70 years if convicted on all counts, according to MyCentralJersey.com. He remains held at the Middlesex County jail in North Brunswick on $300,000 bail.

A date for the trail has not been set, the report said.

Johnson is charged with three counts of robbery, two counts of conspiracy to commit an armed robbery, burglary while armed, attempted burglary while armed, criminal restraint, theft, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, aggravated assault, riot and conspiracy to commit riot.

He was originally arrested for one armed robbery and posted $100,000 bail, but he was then charged with two more armed robberies in New Brunswick and taking part in an attack on Delafield Street in New Brunswick that left the victim with a broken jaw, according to authorities.

Five other former players were also charged following a fight over a parking space that left a man with a broken jaw.
