N.J. city is 5th-most expensive to rent 1-bedroom apartment: report

Jersey City has always been seen as an inexpensive alternative to living in New York City, but it certainly isn't cheap to live in New Jersey's second largest city.

In fact, Jersey City is the fifth most expensive city in the country to rent a one-bedroom apartment, according to a personal finance website.

The median rent for a one-bedroom apartment here is a cool $2,200 a month, gobankingrates.com said. Jersey City ranked behind only San Francisco ($3,395), San Jose, California ($2,505), New York ($2,395) and Washington, D.C. ($2,271).

On the plus side, Jersey City renters can save money on transportation because of the city's multiple mass transit options. And the website the city high mark for the low cost of utilities.

Gobankingrates also researched Jersey City apartment amenities that you might have if you owned your own home:

-- 44 percent of apartments have dishwasher

-- 39 percent have a washer-dryer

-- 8 percent have a pool

-- 16 percent have a fitness center

-- 8 percent have a parking garage

-- 3 percent allow pets

On the flip side, El Paso, Texas, is the cheapest place to find a one-bedroom apartment, at $555 a month. El Paso is followed by Detroit ($600), Wichita, Kansas ($625), Tucscon, Arizona ($628), and Fresno, California ($650).
