The How

An area of low pressure and a cold front will cause plentiful thunderstorms throughout the day today. The cold front will push easy by tonight, but that pesky low pressure system is expected to wobble over the entire Great Lakes region through the weekend.

Low pressure causes the perfect environment for thunderstorms, because it causes a very important ingredient to formation: lift. As air rises it becomes very unstable as it cools to its dew point forming condensation and rain.

However, there doesn't seem to be too much atmospheric moisture to support storms, so no severe strength thunderstorms are expected at this time.

Low pressure is also the culprit behind the strong winds. The atmosphere likes to get back to neutral, so when we have an area of low pressure, the atmosphere tries to "fill" this low. As air will try to fill this low, winds naturally will pick up.
