Watch for heavy thunderstorms with heat index to top 100 degrees in N.J.

Another day, more sizzling temperatures in New Jersey.

The difference is that Monday is likely to to be wet across much of the state. Rain, some of it heavy, is already falling as of 6:30 a.m. across a large swath central and South Jersey.

Later this afternoon, there's a threat of more showers and thunderstorms, the National Weather Service says. Damaging winds, brief heavy rainfall and localized flooding in areas with poor drainage are also a possibility.

Highs will be in the mid to upper 90s in many places with heat indexes well above 100 degrees. The forecast shows Camden's heat index could reach 109 degrees.

The shore will be slightly less oppressive, with highs likely to hit about 90.

Along with the scorching conditions comes another day of watches and advisories.

An excessive heat warning is in effect until 6 p.m. for Mercer, Camden, Gloucester, and northwestern Burlington counties. The rest of the state is under a heat advisory from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The entire state has reached at least 71 degrees as of just after 6:30 a.m, the state climatologist's office said. It's already 80 in Lyndhurst and Point Pleasant as well as in multiple spots in Cumberland County.

There won't be much relief this evening or for the next several days.

Lows will fall into the 70s on a muggy evening before the string of 90-plus degree temperatures continues Tuesday. It won't be nearly as hot but highs are still expected to climb into the low to mid 90s on Tuesday and the low 90s on Wednesday.

Both days are shaping up to be dry.
