If you had your ears to the music blogosphere over the last week or so, chances are you heard the online premiere of “Bruise,” the debut single from San Diego art/indie-rock band the Lulls.
While new tracks from local bands are great, why settle for audio-only when you can have visuals too? Since sometimes you can have your cake and eat it too, feast your eyes on the SoundDiego premiere of “Bruise” -- the official music video.
Even though the Lulls (bassist/vocalist Cameron Wilson, drummer/vocalist Ryan Miller, and guitarist/vocalist Rutger Rosenborg) are technically “new,” there’s an instant familiarity with the trio’s sound, mainly because they previously comprised three-fourths of experimental pop group Ed Ghost Tucker (who were one of my local faves, if we're being honest).
And while the current incarnation of the group is now short a member, the Lulls lads haven’t showed any signs of slowing down. In fact, they’ve embraced the minimalistic aspect of being a trio -- with each of them sharing lead vocals on “Bruise,” as well as the other tracks featured on their forthcoming album set to be released this fall. According to Rosenborg (a SoundDiego associate editor btw), it’ll be out in the “end of September, possibly beginning of October, depending on when we get vinyl.”
Say what? The Lulls on vinyl? Take all of my money.
In case you were wondering, the vocals aren’t the only part of “Bruise” that stand out -- the Cameron Wilson-directed video’s cacophony of quick cuts and hypnotic visual effects also adds to the song’s mesmerizing daze -- but its smooth and steady propulsion, occasional French lyric, synth-ified guitar lines, and low-down funky outro confirm what we already know: The Lulls are no laughing matter (lolz).
