Should you buy a VR headset right now? Head-to-Head – Video

Virtual reality is the next big thing, but is it worth buying a VR headset right now?

The HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and upcoming PlayStation VR are transforming the way we play games, but are these first generation devices worthy of our hard earned cash?

TrustedReviews Editor Evan Kypreos (@EvanKypreos) and Computing Editor Michael Passingham (@MrPassingham) go Head-to-Head over whether you should invest in a VR headset now, or maybe wait and see.

EVAN SAYS…

VR is FANTASTIC!

It’s not perfect, there are lots of issues to overcome, but when you strap the headset on and start playing a game – everything else goes out the window. It’s incredibly immersive and most importantly, lots of fun.

I believe the HTC Vive offers the best VR experience at the moment, although finding the space to set it up has been difficult and it’s not ideal to have my gaming PC in the living room. I find myself strapping on the Oculus Rift more often instead as it’s easier to setup and provides a great virtual reality experience.

They’re not perfect and they certainly aren’t cheap, but if you want the best gaming experience right now, get yourself a Rift or a Vive.

MICHAEL SAYS…

Virtual reality is a lot of fun, but it’s far too soon for most consumers to get on board the VR bandwagon.

The cheapest of the big three VR headsets coming out in 2016 is the PS VR, and that’s still going to cost you £350. Then you need to factor in the price of a PS4/PS4.5 console, or gaming PC if you choose the Rift or Vive.. This makes VR simply too expensive for most of us right now.

Even if you can afford one, you’ve got to contend with cables trailing around your feet, pixellated graphics, a serious lack of good quality games and far more faff than it’s worth!

VR is definitely the future, but it’s not ready yet.

What do you think?

Have Evan and Michael got it all wrong? Would you buy a HTC Vive, Oculus Rift or PSVR or wait until prices drop or second generation devices make their way to the shops?
